Kidnappers free victim after getting ransom

By DEEDEE CORRELL THE GAZETTE

A Colorado Springs man was forced from his pickup truck Friday by kidnappers who held him overnight, then released him Saturday after his family paid the ransom demanded, police said.

Carlos Ornelas, 29, was released in the south end of the city with minor injuries, including a bump on his head. No arrests had been made as of Saturday night.

Police, who tailed the family as they raced from one location to another per instructions they received in a series of telephone calls, called the situation extremely rare.

“I’ve been here 20 years, and I’ve never been involved in anything like this. It felt like an episode out of ‘Without A Trace,’” said Sgt. Sal Fiorillo, who heads the police major crimes unit.

It was unclear why Ornelas was targeted.   “That’s what we’re still trying to sort out,” Fiorillo said Saturday night.

The kidnapping apparently took place about 10 p.m. Friday as Ornelas drove in the 3300 block of Hancock Expressway in southeast Colorado Springs. It’s unclear how the suspects got him to stop his truck, but several witnesses said he was placed in another car and driven away.
Some of them were unsure what they were seeing but believed he was being taken against his will.  When police arrived, they found Ornelas’ truck empty, with the doors open.

About 7 a.m. Saturday, Ornelas’ family received a phone call from the kidnappers demanding money. Police did not release the amount specified.
The kidnappers then called the family several times and gave them instructions on where to go.

Police radio traffic indicated police used their helicopter and unmarked cars to monitor the situation and follow the family through the city. They seemed to focus their attention on the south end of the city.

Police didn’t disclose where Ornelas was held Friday night or exactly where and when he was released.
“He got to a phone and called police,” Fiorillo said.   Police were interviewing Ornelas on Saturday evening, as well as “several witnesses and people of interest,” Fiorillo said.
Colorado Springs police are asking anyone with information about the kidnapping to contact Detective Rick Gysin at 444-7500 or they may remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.

After following the instructions of the kidnapper to travel all around the city, the family member ended up at the location below.

Police involvement did not end here, but as there is still an investigation going on, all I'll say is, when you finally get to hear the rest of the story, you will agree... there are commendations due to the officers of CSPD that were involved in this one!!!

Robberies

The same day a south side bank was robbed, another armed robbery took place at a pawn shop on Academy, late last week.

And across town, in Old Colorado City, alert tellers may have averted a robbery.   A person, matching the description  of a previous robber, attempted to gain access after the door was locked. They notified police who responded to the Canon National bank on W. Colorado. The suspect fled...
