Emma Crawford would have been proud... Part 1

From a Manitou Springs Website;

"This Halloween weekend, Manitou Springs celebrates Emma Crawford in a decidedly unusal way. What? You say you never heard of Emma Crawford? Well, let's get a little background. At the turn of the century, young tuberculosis-ridden Emma came to Colorado looking for a cure. During her stay in Manitou Springs she became obsessed with the local Red Mountain. In fact, she became so obsessed that she was convinced she saw an Indian guide waiting for her at the top. She managed to drag herself to the summit of Red Mountain and decided that upon her death, she was to be buried atop the glorious mountain. And die she did--just before she was to be wed. Her begrieved fiancé fulfilled Emma's great wish and placed her restfully high upon the Mountain.

But how was Emma to know that after many years and many storms, the earth would give way around her subterranian home? During a particularly wet storm, the poor lass--still in her coffin with nameplate attached--was washed from the earth, and slid all the way down the side of the mountain. She was found by two local boys who took her to City Hall where she remained for two years, while officials searched in vain for her descendants. Finally, she was buried in an unmarked grave in the Manitou Springs cemetery. Apparently, the townspeople felt a bit guilty about Emma's long and difficult post-mortem battle. So, for the past four years, in honor of Emma's struggle to simply "rest in peace," and for her subsequent big race down the mountain, the town has been throwing its annual Emma Crawford Festival. And how do they celebrate this? Why, they race down the mountainside in coffins of course!"

In Part 1 of "Emma Crawford would have been proud..." enjoy pics of the 25 racing teams who participated, as they walk in the parade of coffins...   Next, in Part 2 I'll share pics of the racing and some behind the scenes stuff.
