"... that second shot did it"
2/17/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - A bit of quick
thinking, and pursuing the interviewees helped provide an excellent article in
today's Gazette written by Dennis Huspeni. Dennis spoke with three jurors
after the verdict was reached and read in the Jereme Lamberth trial.
“Some people wanted less — reckless manslaughter — but that second shot did
it,” Smith said.
Koellhoffer agreed. ... But they kept coming back to that second shot.
I highly recommend this article! Dennis
gets two big News Blab thumbs up for this one. Congrats Dennis!!!

"Part 2 - Media coverage of Friday's verdict
announcement,
swimming the jury pool"
2/17/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - Yesterday I
shared photos of the media arriving, and talking with the defense team.
Today the media goes swimming in the jury pool, as they pursue interviews with
jury members, after the trial.
Photos by News Blab

Christina Salvo from Fox 21 was the first to score contact with one of the
jurors as he departed the courthouse. Christina saw him as he came through the
doors, and made her move.

She was also the first to get an interview with him, and as you can see... other
media members soon saw what was happening, and made their moves to jockey for
position.

KOAA started to ask some questions, but the juror decided Christina's interview
was enough I guess, and told the other media members goodbye...

... and quickly walked away.

And as before, with the defense team... the newspaper people were in pursuit.
Note: As you'll see in a bit, Fox 21 also followed the lone juror, only to
find themselves in another good position.
One I don't think they expected to be in.

What followed... was a surprise. Other members of the Jereme Lamberth
trial jury were seen across the street, walking toward the jury parking area,
with many Sheriff's Deputies escorting them. They must have exited through a
back door. And those media members who then saw them, made their move...

...with some, like KRDO TV News Channel 13, running to catch them... if they
could.

But alas... they were stopped by the traffic signals... and deputies...???, as
they stood there, watching jurors get into their vehicles and begin to drive
away.
But... as noted earlier... there were a number of media members already across
the street at the jury parking area.

KXRM's Christina Salvo, her photog, and the Gazette reporter and Gazette photog
were already over there.
Tomorrow I'll share some miscellaneous photos I got while covering the media
coverage of the verdict announcement. Some fun photos. Stay tuned...
"Part 1 - Media coverage of Friday's verdict
announcement,
in chronological order"
2/16/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - As expected, the
media was out in force Friday afternoon to cover the verdict announcement in the
Jereme Lamberth trial. Here are some of the scenes, in chronological order, from
outside the courthouse during that coverage. See Part 1 today... and Part
2 tomorrow.
Photos by News Blab

When I arrived, this was the scene in front of the courthouse. It was about 15
minutes before the verdict reading.

And this is what I could see on the east side, across the street from the
courthouse.

More from the east side of the courthouse.

Many of the media were already inside, as more arrived with camera gear in tow.

Gearing up for more LIVE shots

And back on the east side, KKTV was being visited by one of Colorado Springs'
unique characters, who was standing in front of the camera, pretending to be
holding a microphone, and doing the news.
When she was done, I told her... maybe 11 News would hire her.

Back on the south side, people start coming out of the courthouse building after
the verdict has been read. KOAA was LIVE outside, and got the first LIVE
interview with the Lamberth defense team, who are waiting to come on camera.

KRDO News Radio was LIVE outside now, also.

While KOAA did their LIVE interview with the defense team, some of the other
news radio folks stood out of the cameras focus and got some sound bites too.
One was News Talk 1460.

And now the media crowd around the defense team as growing, each waiting in the
wings, hoping to get an interview.

Ahh... the pursuit is on. Who would be next???

And the crowd grows again... everyone wants in on this one!

And just when you thought it was over... the newspaper people follow the defense
team down the sidewalk, getting their stories.

But wait... there's much more. A lone juror has just come out of the
courthouse... He turns after being called, and the person who caught his
attention is from the media. Who is it that was the first to get to one of
the jurors... after the trial was over? I'll show you who that media
person is... Sunday on News Blab. As well as much more, including other jurors
talking with or walk away from the media and a bunch more!. Stay tuned.
"Much more media coverage of the verdict
announcement,
Saturday & Sunday on News Blab"

2/15/08: Colorado
Springs, CO -
I'll share photos of the media coverage outside the
courthouse... and I got a bunch of them. As the media was swarming the
area, it was hard not to get a bunch. Everything from interviews with the
defense lawyers, and one juror, to chasing down other jurors as they left the
courthouse under guard, and the gearing up for more LIVE shots.
A media coverage smorgasbord on News Blab...
Saturday & Sunday. Stay tuned...
"Oops... KRDO News Radio may have been first,
but they announced wrong verdict"
2/15/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - He kept saying,
"You are hearing it first on KRDO news radio", and that may have been the case,
but what I heard first on KRDO radio turned out to be the wrong verdict in the
Jereme Lamberth trial.
KRDO News Radio announced to their listening
public that Lamberth was convicted of first degree murder, and they announced
that wrong verdict a number of times. They did correct their error within
about 15 seconds of their wrong announcement,
prefacing their admittance with the words,
"... that happens in breaking news... it's second degree murder..."
I talked briefly with KRDO News Radio announcer
Dan Cochell about the error, asking him to confirm who had made that original
announcement over the air. He confirmed that it was Greg Neft, but I don't
know where Greg received his information from. I also talked with Tak
Landrock of KRDO News Channel 13, who was inside near where the verdict was
announced, and Tak told me it was hard to hear in there. But he did
confirm that KRDO TV did announce it was second degree murder.
Hear KRDO News Radio's wrong verdict
announcement, here:

Note: This write-up is not to fault anyone. I
know it was a hectic time and there were many factors that must have contributed
to this, so please... I hope no one takes offense.

"Valentines Day burglary, pursuit, crash, foot
chase, and arrest"
2/15/08: (7:00 AM,
NB Staff) Colorado
Springs, CO - Late yesterday
evening police were called to the area of the Chapel Hills Mall on a report of
people breaking into vehicles and removing items from those vehicles. A
description of the vehicle associated with the BMV's was given... and the search
was on.
A short time later, CSPD Officers observed the
vehicle and attempted to stop it. That is when the driver of the vehicle
decided to flee the area, ignoring officer's request to stop.
A multi CSPD cruiser pursuit was now underway.
After about 10 minutes, the pursuit was called off when the driver became too
erratic, possibly endangering life or property, now ignoring traffic control
signals, etc. It was after this that at least one, possibly two other
vehicles, not involved with the earlier chase, were hit by the vehicle involved
in the BMV's, causing minor damage, but adding additional charges if the driver
was caught.
And he was! Not long after the pursuit was
terminated, the occupants of the vehicle were seen running from the vehicle and
into an apartment complex on Murray Blvd. Officers, including K9 quickly
rounded them up. Once again... the Officer's of the CSPD, do us proud!
Thanks CSPD!!!

"What ever happened to Jim Sanders?"
2/14/08: (7:00 PM) Colorado
Springs, CO -
A request via the "Got a tip?" form prompts this
write-up.
A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to
Jim Sanders, formerly of KNTV, NBC's O&O in San Jose/San Francisco at last
November's NorCal Radio-Television News Directors Association of Northern
California (RTNDA) 26th Annual Awards presentation. Sanders stepped down as News
Director of KNTV in September 07 for health reasons, according to reports.
The News Blab tipster told me Sanders worked at KRDO in Colorado Springs at one
time, and may still have family living here.
"Why can't the USOC sell that Banning-Lewis Ranch
150 acres to pay for office space?"
2/14/08: (12:00 PM,
NB Staff) Colorado
Springs, CO -
So... to keep the United States Olympic Committee here in Colorado Springs,
taxpayers have to pick up some of their office space bill? It sounds like if
LandCo "donated" the office space in their new Stratton Pointe building,
taxpayers will be in that picture somehow. Am I wrong?
Based on what I just saw on the El Paso Land
website, it appears in 1987 the USOC was ganted 150 acres in (if I'm not
mistaken) the soon to be populated Banning-Lewis Ranch area. I'm guessing that
parcel is worth a pretty penny. Don't you think they (the USOC) might consider
selling it, using that big bunch of money for what they need/want (office
space), instead of, what appears to be holding us (the City) hostage with a
demand to acquire, for free, office space... else they will get out of Dodge, in
this case Colorado Springs being that Dodge....???

"Interesting comment found on Gaz page"
2/14/08:
Colorado Springs,
CO - I found the
following "interesting" comment on the Gaz page containing the article I
discussed in
my, "Developer & campaign
contributor Ray Marshall gets a
City Council thumbs up for non-standard practice", write-up from
yesterday.
From the Gaz comment section:
valvolorum wrote:
The Gazette shouldn't just be reporting on this, it should be investigating the
connection between Landco and the members of Council and professional staff who
are ready to give away the store to this outfit in order to boost downtown
redevelopment and find a posh new home for the shakedown artists inside the USOC.
Council already built Landco a new parking garage, which will provide the
company's tenants with subsidized parking (and spaces the company might
otherwise have to provide for itself)and have a skywalk that also just happens
to link the new garage to the city administration building. Now city officials
seem to be working behind closed doors to provide the company a coveted tenant (USOC)
and hefty tax breaks (read: subsidies) through the special district. I'm all for
downtown redevelopment, but something about this scheme smells rotten. There's a
whole lot of string pulling and back-rubbing going on, between Landco and city
officials. The Gazette should be digging much deeper. The Colorado Open Records
Act exists for just this reason. Use it. Has anyone bothered to review campaign
finance records for the mayor and councilpeople who are greasing the skids?
Landco, the USOC and City Hall can write their own press releases. The Gazette
should be a watchdog, not a lapdog.
"Developer & campaign
contributor Ray Marshall gets a
City Council thumbs up for non-standard practice"
2/13/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - The Gazette is
reporting LandCo Chairman Ray Marshall is still refusing to talk about dealings
made or in the works surrounding LandCo's Stratton Pointe being a possible new
home for the US Olympic Committee. But, what is known... on Tuesday Colorado
Springs City Council approved the creation of four districts for LandCo Equity
Partners, something common when financing new developments, but not common when
renovating older downtown properties such as LandCo's Stratton Pointe, according
to the Gazette article.

"44 Cal + TV = ambulance ride for Springs' man"
2/13/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - Around 4 PM this
afternoon a Colorado Springs man said he was "...cleaning his gun, a 44 caliber
revolver, when it went off, and shot his TV set". He was injured during the
unexpected incident. For his actions he got a free ride to the hospital
via an AMR ambulance. He also received a visit by both, CSPD and CSFD.
My first question would be... Cleaning your
gun... right... What TV show were you really mad at...???

"Hey... diggin' up dirt is a News Blab thing,
KKTV, and I smell a story here!"
2/13/08: Colorado
Springs, CO - Is this a sweeps
stunt, diggin' up this dirt, KKTV? If you don't know what I'm talkin'
about... KKTV did a story about a Classical Academy board member guy receiving
anonymous e-mails of the blackmail type. Below is their story via their
website. Read this, and I'll continue my spewing below their story...
From the KKTV website:

School Official Receives Blackmail Threat
Posted: 8:48 PM Feb 12, 2008
Last Updated: 6:30 AM Feb 13, 2008
Reporter: David Nancarrow
An anonymous e-mail puts the head of The Classical Academy's school board in the
cross-hairs of an apparent black-mail plot. The board chair tells 11 News it
threatens to reveal parts of his past if certain demands aren't met.
A recent e-mailed response is not the first TCA school board chair Matt
Carpenter has made to an anonymous writer.
"All these e-mails, the half dozen that have been sent out the past month or so
are just inflammatory, but never have any specifics," Carpenter said.
The latest, coming from a group calling themselves TCA Parents Unite, Carpenter
said points out details of his past. Specifically, how he met his wife, who he
admits at the time was married to another man. Carpenter acknowledged the
details in an e-mailed response to the TCA community and at a recent board
meeting.
He said the mystery e-mailer implies a lot of other things, which aren't true.
"I've got no problem telling the truth. I think that's worthwhile and the
appropriate thing to do. Unfortunately, this person likes to tell lies and not
sign their name," said Carpenter.
"We profess to be a character school. This is disgusting,” said basketball coach
and TCA parent Pam Demkowicz.
Demkowicz doesn't know the writer, but believes the messages are another shot
fired in a back-and-forth over school spending. It’s a battle Lisa Miller
believes is catching the all-volunteer board in the middle.
"We don't always agree with what they do, but we're always supportive of what
they do for our school," Miller said.
Carpenter said TCA Parents Unite demands the termination of the school’s
six-year CEO and President Mark Hyatt. Carpenter says that won't happen, and
recommends an anonymous writer follow school philosophy.
"In our model of conflict resolution people come face to face and talk with each
other. That's the only way to resolve it," he said.

Okay... now I'll continue my spew. It appears
the Classical Academy will be holding a "Board of Directors Special Session",
tonight... one not open to the public. I confirmed this with a quick call
to their "President's office". I was told the "special session" is for
board members only... BUT, there will be a town hall meeting, which IS open to
the public following the "special session".
That town hall meeting will be held tonight
(Wednesday) from 7 PM - 9 PM at the TCA East Campus, 8650 Scarborough Dr.
Here is the posted agenda for their "special
session".
I. Call to Order
II. Pledge of Allegiance/Roll Call
III. Executive Session per -C.R.S. -
§ 24-6-402(4)(f), for the purpose of discussing personnel issues
IX. Adjournment
Just how much of a story this will be, is yet to
be seen... but I can think of a few "interesting" angles a news station could
follow. And I have to wonder, will KKTV be the only news station attending
the town hall meeting tonight? Wow... don't you just love this Peyton
Place news...??? It's SWEEPS time baby...!!!
